About Us

The HISD Foundation is dedicated to the support of the Houston Independent School District and its mission of providing every student with a consistently rigorous education in a safe environment. Established in 1994, the HISD Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that is governed by a volunteer board of directors that includes local business, industry, and community leaders. In September 2014, the HISD Foundation was ranked 12th in a national study ranking the top 100 largest school district foundations.

Since 2008, the foundation has raised over $30 million in funds to support districtwide and school-based programs and initiatives aimed at increasing student academic achievement and eliminating the minority achievement gap, developing and retaining effective educators in every classroom, and ensuring students are prepared for success in college and the workforce. Programs include literacy, dropout prevention, student scholarships, expansion of Advanced Placement courses, the Effective Teacher Initiative, and the Apollo 20 School Turnaround Project.

The HISD Foundation works with Superintendent of Schools Terry Grier, the HISD Board of Education, and Houston’s business leaders and philanthropic community to not only raise funds for the district but to provide support for teachers, students, and parents as well as to bring overall awareness to the district’s commitment of providing every student with a quality education. Signature programs and events supported by the foundation include the annual HISD State of the Schools luncheon, the Celebration of Excellence which honors the district’s top teachers and principals, Volunteers in Schools, and Cool to be Smart, which gives high schools seniors who take AP courses and the corresponding exams the opportunity to win scholarships, computers, and even a brand new car.
